Such items would have been carried as a charm against fire as it was believed that the salamander could survive flames and put them out. The brooch was found after centuries underwater in remarkably good condition, though with some of its rubies missing,\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Salvador Brooch is inspired by this piece.
