The Salvador Brooch is one-of-a-kind. It has been made using recycled 9ct yellow gold and is set with a 0.50ct ruby.

Part of the One-of-a-Kind Collection

This brooch is part of our collection of unique pieces of jewellery - there is only one of these pieces available.

A salamander brooch set with several rubies was recovered from the wreck of the Spanish ship La Girona, which sank in the 16th century. Such items would have been carried as a charm against fire as it was believed that the salamander could survive flames and put them out. The brooch was found after centuries underwater in remarkably good condition, though with some of its rubies missing,

The Salvador Brooch is inspired by this piece. The ruby is set as though held in its tail, as though it has recovered one of the missing gems from the shipwreck.

We carved the salamander by hand and cast the piece using the lost wax casting method in recycled 9ct yellow gold, then finished it with a high polish.

One-of-a-Kind: The Story

The One-of-a-Kind collection began with the opportunity to purchase an unusual parcel of gemstones. It featured a diverse mix ranging from amethysts and iolites to coloured diamonds. Faced with so many possibilities, we chose to let the stones lead the design process.

This became our “Gemstone Challenge” which we share on our social media: selecting a stone at random and creating directly from it, rather than starting with a fixed design.

Working this way has pushed us in unexpected directions, resulting in pieces that sit outside our core collections. Each one is shaped by the character of its gemstone and carries its own distinct story - guided by chance and craftsmanship.
